Connecting with you

Posted on: June 24, 2020

Thank you again for being a part of my community and for trusting me to be a part of your life experience.

I wanted to connect with you today, and check in, because I know you haven’t heard much from me since my last email that expressed my commitment to Allyship.

My commitment has led me, these past two weeks, to spend the majority of my time listening to, and learning from leaders who are experts in anti-racism work and racism healing.

I’ve learned from Ericka Hines that the first two steps in Barbara J. Love’s Liberatory Consciousness Framework, Awareness and Analysis, need significant attention as we move into the Action step.

Just like any goal that I make in my life or my business, becoming more educated about the things I don’t know that I don’t know, make for a forever plan that’s likely to be successful, and cause less mistakes and less harm.

For me, this has been a time to slow down, to listen, and to face the emotions that have come up.

At the same time, it’s also about continuing to support and lead my many online communities, imperfectly, as I take steps forward.

Saying yes to those things has required more sleep, more time to reflect, to digest, to process.

So where am I now? Where will our team go from here?

My team and I are moving forward and getting support that we need to become more educated and more equipped with tools that will allow us to facilitate our personal lives, our business, and our mission in a way that is more diverse, more equitable, and more inclusive.

This isn’t an overnight plan. It’s a forever plan. We’ll be coming out with our DEI statement as we move forward and receive deeper understanding.

In the meantime, I’ll be sharing content, showing up online a bit more, and doing all of those things I love to do to be of service to you WHILE I figure out as I go what that looks like, and how it might shift.

What we’re up to

With the intention of spreading support and education throughout our community and industry, I will share what we’re up to:

1) We began by attending this Town Hall meeting and signing the Anti-Racist Small Business Pledge:

A town hall to listen, learn & commit to building equitable, anti-racist organizations

2) Our team is working with Milagros Phillips, The Race Healer via her weekly trainings each Monday, Race, Grief & Healing. These weekly trainings are affordable and you can bring your team, your friends, your family, etc. You can find her website here:

3) Our team has registered for The Adaway Group’s Whiteness at Work Summer Series, which you’ll find here:

I’m wishing you love and I’ll be in touch soon,

Mel ❤️
